Cycling in the College Valley
Cycle Northumberland’s Hidden Gem.
Cycling in the College Valley is a truly special experience — a chance to immerse yourself in one of the UK’s most peaceful and protected landscapes, with virtually traffic-free roads, awe-inspiring scenery, and a wealth of routes suitable for all levels of ability.
Whether you're a keen road cyclist, a family looking for a gentle ride, or a mountain biker craving something more adventurous, the Valley and surrounding Cheviot Hills offer something for everyone.
Quiet Roads and Scenic Routes
Thanks to a strict vehicle permit system — with only 12 cars allowed into the Valley per day — cyclists enjoy a rare level of freedom and tranquillity on the tarmac roads that wind gently through this secluded corner of Northumberland. From Hethpool, you can follow a circular route through the heart of the Valley, passing hill farms, tumbling burns, and grazing livestock, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Cheviots.
The road surface is generally good, and gradients are manageable for most riders. E-bikes are welcome too and can help open up the longer routes without compromising the experience. The route to Mounthooly is especially scenic and passes through some of the Valley’s most untouched landscapes.
Gravel and Off-Road Adventures
For those on gravel bikes or mountain bikes, there are several exciting off-road trails that weave through forested areas and along the valley edges. These unpaved tracks are ideal for more adventurous riders looking to explore hidden corners of the College Valley and enjoy views that aren’t accessible by car.
Please note that some tracks cross private land or conservation areas — be sure to check route permissions and always follow the countryside code. The nearby bridleways and hill tracks are also popular with experienced riders, especially those linking with the wider Cheviot Hills and Border Ridge.
Route Ideas & Local Tips
Hethpool to Mounthooly Hut and back (approx. 16km return): A popular out-and-back route, peaceful and scenic, with the option to picnic by the College Burn.
Circular loop via Trowupburn and Southernknowe: A longer ride taking in expansive views and more varied terrain.
Off-road extension to The Cheviot base (gravel/mountain bike only): Rewarding but challenging, best tackled with a GPS map or local guide.
Plan Ahead
Bring sufficient water, snacks, and a basic tool kit — amenities are limited within the Valley, and mobile signal can be patchy. Helmets are advised at all times.
Please Note: If you’re planning to drive into the College Valley with your bikes, remember that car access is limited to 12 daily permits. These must be pre-booked through the College Valley Estate website.
